An introduction to White Hat and Black Hat terms as used in connection with marketing language

Follow up of recent post that promised to tell more about these two terms that are often used when marketers talk online. This is also a follow up to the Marketing Castle Rock series, that we have posted here recently.

 

A few posts back (in a post from yesterday), I mentioned the words of White Hat tricks and Black Hat tricks. These are words often used when discussing Search Engines Optimization efforts. I promised that I would give you more insights into these areas, but then I got all caught up in my efforts of getting this website here ranked for the keywords of Marketing Castle Rock.

Well, I do wish to live up to my promise, so here goes, let’s look a little at the White Hat versus Black Hat tricks.

Now, the entire series that I have had going on these past 2 or 3 days, which I call Marketing Castle Rock series, has all been about getting the ranking in Google’s search results for the words of Marketing Castle Rock, so that’s why we even encountered the terms White Hat and Black Hat. In short White Hat are true and real measures that you can engage in in order to seek your desired ranking results, while Black Hat take on a more dubious character.

The White Hat elements would be to actually bring real content that has real value for the ones who are looking for what you are bringing. That means you are bringing real posts or articles with really good content from which people will derive a real value. It could be entertainment content that’s really good or it could be for instance educational content, such as content on How To Get Ranked For Your Keywords.

White Hat also means that you are matching the keywords that you are seeking to get ranked for with words that are actually relevant for what people are searching for.

So for instance if I was to search for something on a new song from Taylor Swift and I end up with relevant material on such a song and that such material actually brought me real and preferably valuable content for my interest, then this would be entirely White Hat. If, however, you were a person of lesser integrity and you made use of tricks that could get you ranked for the same new song from Taylor Swift, but all you really wanted to show when I clicked your link was something you wanted to e.g. sell me, that had actually nothing to do with Taylor Swift or her new song, then you would term your use of efforts completely Black Hat.

When Google returns search results to you for whatever words you typed in, Google really wants to match up the results with something useful that will get you to something your wanted to get to. This does not preclude any sales, so pages that sell stuff are totally fine as long as what is being sold there (and provided it’s a legitimate seller) is what you were looking for. I might for instance soon need to go looking for a new bike for my little son who has outgrown his first bike, so if I typed in something like “best bike for a 5 year old”, then I might be perfectly happy about finding a review page that would tell me about the current top 4 or 5 models on the market, include a pro and con list or comparison of each, included the reviewer’s personal choices and reasons for same, along with a buy it here now button. That could still be highly valuable for me and would make up something that would make it easy and relevant for me.

If, however, the result in the same search got me to a page, where the content had little or nothing to do with “best bike for a 5 year old”, but that the person behind the landing page was really just scheming in order to get the traffic (me visiting as well as other searchers using similar search words) and trying to sell me something else (don’t really know what that would be in this case), well, then for sure this site would have implemented Black Hat elements in order to get a ranking for the searched keywords. In effect, such a search result would not have been what Google would have intended for you, but since Google is driven by machines (bots and algorithms), then results like this could potentially slip through if the culprit had employed techniques that made it pass through the net.

In my view there is something sinister about the Black Hat operations. That’s why I illustrated this article with the image of the sinister guy in the rain. Of course he lost his black hat in the image, but you get the point.

Google’s algorithms change and are updated from time to time.

Very often Google make changes to actually close loopholes that schemers have found and are using to pass their websites in front of innocent and unsuspecting people. If you have read a thing or two about such algorithm updates, you might often have heard the whining and crying of marketers who all of a sudden lost ranking and traffic after an update from Google had been implemented.

My personal take on most of such whining that I have encountered via the internet is that their losses were well deserved. Often they were using tricks just to get ranked, instead of actually seeking to provide real value to the end receiver. Perhaps whatever they were selling were good enough, but they hadn’t acquired the traffic in what I would term in appropriate ways.

Perhaps they were buying their ways to thousand of links to the websites from dubious websites all over. Websites that were just set up to provide these so-called backlinks. Or perhaps they utilized an array of scheming plots to get the ranking in place.

I have never studied the Black Tricks myself, so I’m actually not really well familiar with how you would do this or what works. It’s not for me. I find it dubious and scheming. Yes, I wish to get my ranking for whatever is really relevant to what my site or my customer’s site is about. But I wish to do so via the correct ways and most notably via actually providing real value and real content.

Is this hard work? and is it possibly harder work?

I think you can concluded a definite YES to both of these questions. However, the good thing is, that if you build your website and your website’s content up to become an authoritative site and a site that’s well worth visiting because you bring real value, real insights and real (and preferably original) content, then you will never be hurt from a Google algorithm update. That’s why you rarely hear whining from those who really bring you good content rich websites.

Employ good sound strategies which include a deliberate attempt to bring valuable articles, posts, videos, insights and such within the topic area that you are about on your website and you can slowly and steadily bring you up in the right positions with Google. It takes a bit more work and it may take quite a while before people actually become aware of it, but over time you may be able to create a following that like your content and will actually help share it among their friends and peers of own account and thereby help you grow your reach.

Employ Black Hat tricks and you will likely be looking over your shoulder for yet another Google algorithm update that will strip your of your achieved ranking. Heck, who knows, Google may even “bury” your site from searches more or less entirely.

A certain type of marketers have always been trying to scheme their way to get in front of people via the search results. As a business owner, you don’t want to be one of them, nor do you want to hire one of them. Use your efforts and money in a wiser way and know that it will be way worth it and be a solution that bears a whole different longevity with it too.

My current series that we are posting these days also here to our latest news has been all about our wish to get ranked for the words Marketing Castle Rock. While I have mentioned, I probably should have chosen some other words or other combination of words (or possibly more long tail search terms), these are the words we chose and have stuck to while we are providing you with an example. For our business, it would make sense to get in front of people who are interested in marketing. Either wanting to learn about how to do it or even better wanting to hire someone knowledgeable to do it for them (that would be us, Amazing Ideas, Inc. we hope). It also makes sense that we would wish to get in front of the businesses that are in our local area, Castle Rock. Not only because it would be nice to further strengthen our relations with the local community and also because sometimes it is just easier and makes for stronger connections when you can meet in person, but also because as I have mentioned previously in the Marketing Castle Rock series, that a local buyer may be much more likely to actually buy now as opposed to just be an information seeker.

As you may understand, in seeking the desired ranking for Marketing Castle Rock we have implemented some efforts, among which is in fact the article/post series in itself. So while this serve what you would call a self-serving purpose, we have also simultaneously brought real value to the series, by explaining to some degree what we are doing, why we are doing it, how we could do better and not least how you could do this with good results for your business. In other words, we are carrying out efforts that helps our ranking, while also bringing real insights and lessons to you along the way.

We even listed in some of the posts a brief list of the takeaways and points for you to consider. Learning points that for a lot of people may in fact entail real aha moments.

 

Our website and not least our efforts of bringing us forth as an authoritative site that adds value to the visitors are very new. Over time and when we keep up decent work and keep bringing sound content, lessons, updates etc., our ranking for relevant terms and words will come more naturally. All beginnings require extensive work. If you have ever tried to build a business from scratch, you know exactly what I mean. Lots of work and lots of moving parts. Often days are filled with set backs until you finally reach a point of decent momentum in a positive direction. Such is it with most websites too.

However, as you can see if you review our Marketing Castle Rock series, we managed to get from a page 21 ranking to a page 2 Google result. The last bit getting to a page 1 may require quite a bit more work, if we even ever get there for these particular 3 words.

I mentioned our chosen 3 words of Marketing Castle Rock may not have been particularly good and I have previously given part reasons to this, so I will not repeat to much of this now. But in short the word “Marketing” in itself, is possibly way too vague not being truly specific to us. It might be a great deal easier to add a few extra descriptive words to the search terms to up the relevancy for what really has to do with us and not the several million other search results you find. Marketing is also a word used in too man connections, so not only does it have a huge competition for that word, but it also can take you to too many unrelated results.

Castle Rock is the name of the town in which Amazing Ideas, Inc. is located so that makes a lot of sense. However, when you do not put quotation marks in your search words, then the three words can make up all sorts of combinations, so it may even include things that has nothing to do with the town of its name, but could have to do with the building “Castle” or with a stone or a “Rock”. Judging from the current search results that I see, it may not be so much be that they relate to the building or the stone, but that the town actually has relevance to the search results, so so far so good. There are also a number of marketing business, marketing companies or marketing agencies among the results, so that also makes the results relevant to what I am hoping to find – all of these would just be colleagues or competitors, depending on how you view it or how good you are at your business.

However, in the search results I see a whole lot of listings that are very little relevant to what I was hoping to see.

There’s the notorious first listing that even has a couple of extra listings on Google’s first page and whose business is actually about auctioning of cattle. Their result is however relevant to the search result only because they have chosen to call themselves CastleRockMarketing. They even have that particular URL/domain name and that counts highly with Google. On top of that they have similarly named Facebook fanpage and a twitter account. It makes complete sense for the Google bots can only see what the machine/bots see.

You might question if it makes sense for someone who auctions off cattle to name themselves CastleRockMarketing (even if they are from Castle Rock), but that’s another story. I suspect they might actually get in front of more relevant people to their particular business if their name indeed did include something about cattle, like e.g. CastleRockCattleMarketing. I know that does get a bit long, but ultimately, they will gain no business from all the searchers of marketing related stuff, who are not trying to sell cattle. So as I said, they may not gain anything at all, but in fact actually lose out to those who will be searching for something related to cattle and sale of same (or possibly buying of same).

Among a lot of the other search results, I see positions of Marketing managers and such listed. It may be very well relevant, just not for the intention I had in mind. Going deeper into the following pages of the Google search results and I see a bunch of properties for sale listings. The location may be highly relevant, but perhaps in my objective, the marketing words seems a miss. But these results are as I say poor in terms of what I intended to get ranked for and also for what I intended to search for when choosing and using the words. This is exactly the result of poorly chosen words and that’s my mistake.

The word marketing is too commonly used for too many things that may have little to do with people wishing to gain marketing insights or better yet hiring a marketing agency such as my Amazing Ideas, Inc. That is why my chosen word of marketing is poorly chosen and that’s what you should avoid. Later some day, we may look into specific research on keywords and how you should go about it, but we will leave that for some other day. For now, let me just repeat briefly that you wish to find somethings that may be even more specific to your business and something that narrows it down even further. Combine it further with longer tail search terms, which essentially are longer sentences to get ranked for.

My poorly chosen words, are likely to make it too tricky to get onto a first page search result and also put me in front of people who are in fact not looking for my offered services, but perhaps are looking for how to market their property or may be looking to obtain a marketing position or something else completely unrelated to my business, my website, my content and my aims.

I can do better than this by selecting better keywords to seek to get listed for. You can do better for your business, by making better choices too and avoiding my hasty mistakes.

Marketing Castle Rock Ranking Took A Step Back

Two Steps Forward One Step Back

I finished the day last night enjoying the fact that we had moved our ranking for our 3 chosen keywords – those being Marketing Castle Rock – up from a page 21 three days ago to a spot on page 2. If you followed along you will see that one of our efforts alone moved us quickly from page 6 to page 2. On page 2 we had the number 4 spot, so page number 1 seemed to be within near reach.

Checking in this morning and out spot had taken a step back for a poorer ranking. OK, it’s actually only one position, so it really isn’t a big deal, but yet psychologically, it’s a step back from the high emotion of success to a set back of a full one position (not bad).

That’s what often happens, in marketing just as we often experience in life.

What happened here is kind of funny, but it also illustrates a point.

The number 1 spot on the Google Search results for Marketing Castle Rock has since we started about 3 days ago been held by a website that actually is called castlerockmarketing.com

It’s kind of funny, for said company has nothing to do with traditional marketing as such, but actually seems to be primarily an auction house for Cattle. That’s right they ones that say muuh. I guess that’s what I get for living in the West out in rural Colorado in the town of Castle Rock.

Now, first off, it proves a point that is worth for you to notice and that is, if you can obtain an URL (i.e. a domain name) that actually entails your keywords, then your rate of success for ranking for same words shoots straight to the top – even without you doing much of anything. Also as I noticed in this case, throughout all my searches for the 3 words of Marketing Castle Rock, these cattle auction guys held the number 1 position, so your position, just due to the right URL, is stronger than most of other efforts you can make (at least for now that seems to be the case).

This is an important point that goes towards how you choose your domain name and it should give you plenty of reason to think about what URL you could think of that might help you in your business.

As I said, these guys have held the number 1 spot throughout and today they even took up the number 3 spot and if we don’t count the Google Local Places results also the number 6 spot. Why?

Why you might ask, did they all of a sudden take up these extra spots, earning them a full 3 important and valuable spots on a page 1 on Google for MY chosen keywords of Marketing Castle Rock?

Beats me.

But they apparently have a Facebook page and a Twitter account and these two popped up and made an appearance this morning for the number 3 and number 6 spot.

Again, the names they have for these two accounts includes the words Castle Rock and Marketing or at least mkgt as short for marketing. Which gets back to the point I made before on the importance that Google places on your URL or Name. For you this means, that you should not only secure adequate account names for your business on the social media. Account names that clearly reference your business name or your URL name.

From a point of view of search engine results, it means finding something that’s descriptive of what it is you offer.

If you are a plumber and you call your company ABC, then it probably won’t help you much in any search results for plumbing services on its own. But change your name that you reference your business to throughout to ABC Plumbing and that changes straight away. Get a Facebook Fanpage called something like facebook.com/abcplumbing and perhaps a twitter account called twitter.com/abcplumbing and you have secured some pretty good real estate.

Now if you don’t post to these accounts once in a while, it’s probably not going to do you much good, yet, in checking in on the facebook and twitter accounts of my cattle competition guys, I found that they posted last on June 2nd 2015 and October 10 2014 on their accounts respectively. In other words not very recently and not very actively, but this only underlines the point of the relative strength that Google do place on the social media account (connected as said to the names of same accounts in relation to what you wish to be found under in a Google Search).

One may wonder, why the respective facebook and twitter accounts didn’t appear in my earlier search results, and when you ask me, my answer would be: Beats me.

Google sometimes works in mysterious ways.

That’s alright too. If it was easy to circumvent everybody would do so, and we would be left with little relevancy to what we found when we performed searches, I suspect.

The changes in the search results on and off, also proves a point I have made previously in this Marketing Castle Rock saga, which is that the internet is a live place. You can do your part to rank well, but others out there are doing things and especially when they are doing things that are relevant for the keywords that you are hoping to get ranked for, it will change the search results too, possibly pushing you back again.

Said in another way, it isn’t a constant.

It also goes back to what I have also posted previously in this continuing story about the fact that Search Engine Optimization (SEO) work is not a one time thing. You don’t just do the work once and get the results and leave it at that. If you do, it’s only a matter of time and your ranking is gone. The more competition for your chosen words, the quicker your ranking will be gone.

No, you will have to have some continuous efforts, but as I have stated previously, it might just be very well worth it.

Well, we will make a few more efforts and see where we will get with our quest to reach a page 1 spot in Google Search results for the words Marketing Castle Rock.

Marketing Castle Rock Now We Are At Page 2

We Are Now On Page 2 For Marketing Castle Rock

I spent the afternoon on the playground with my two small kids and my wife. I think we ended up there for about small 3 hours. Whew! That’s a lot for me to cope with, but the kids had fun and that was the important bit.

Following the playground we did some grocery shopping and returned home for some light dinner.

Curious as I am, I couldn’t help myself for checking where we were at.

And where were we?

On Page 2 of Google’s search results for the 3 chosen keywords: Marketing Castle Rock.

Yes, this is yet another follow up on the Get Ranked For Marketing Castle Rock saga, the work of which I commenced about 3 days ago. 3 days ago I was at page 21 and now I am at page 2. Not bad for just a few days with some effort put in place. On top of that some very low key efforts. Nothing terribly fancy. Nothing that cost me any money, only a little time and of course the implementation of some very key things that I know works.

However, I couldn’t help myself, but just ran another check to see how well we are doing for getting ranked under the keywords Marketing Castle Rock.

We started off on page 21 on Google and nobody goes that far into a search result really.

In my previous post from just this afternoon, we were at page 13, and now, our last entry titled When SEO Becomes A Game – Ranking For Marketing Castle Rock Continued less than an hour later and we have moved all the way to page 6!!!

Wait a little longer and I bet we are even further ahead by one or more pages.

Now, these results keep changing, so if you check in later, the results may be completely something else. That’s why your SEO work is never done and why you must keep at it.

However, it also proves that you can advance very rapidly.

Funny enough, a friend of mine saw my post yesterday and it incurred a conversation. She said to me, remember that “Google is slow”. I couldn’t agree more and I think my previous post’s placement proved that point entirely.

Success With Ranking High For Marketing Castle Rock Just Ahead

When SEO Becomes A Game – Ranking For Marketing Castle Rock Continued

We continue our saga on how we are getting ranked high in Google’s search results for the keywords: Marketing Castle Rock.

The two posts explain why I’m doing this and why it’s important. They also explain why my chosen keywords in fact are not the presenting the smartest choice and why I may in fact never get to a really good ranking for them either. Indeed, you may wish to review these posts just to see what you really shouldn’t do and instead to learn more about what you should do, so that you can get decent results.

Anyways, I just want to make this post short and just give you another update to our ranking.

When doing this kind of work, SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimization, can actually become fun. It almost becomes a game. For you are doing small implementations of things, waiting a bit for the search engines to follow up with them crawling the sites and then you check in again to see if what you did carried any weight and made any positive changes for what you are tying to achieve.

My efforts and if you will experiment started a couple of days ago. I put out the public announcement that I wanted to pay attention to some of the local businesses in the area in which I live and my business is located, Castle Rock. I made it known that I would lie to help more local Castle Rock businesses with their marketing and help them implement the right strategies, tools and marketing systems that will grow their businesses, revenues and ultimately their profits.

The following day, I kind of realized that I haven’t made any efforts at all into making my services nor my company’s presence rank in any search engines. I help businesses with marketing and love to see the positive outcomes the come about from my help, but in my eagerness of helping other businesses, I had completely forgotten to implement similar strategies that I recommend any business to do for my own business. In other words, I was a bad example of what I tell others to do.

So the day before yesterday and yesterday, I implemented the first few steps. I instantly moved from page 21 to page 15 (as well as actually had an appearance on page 1 of Google, via my Google Local Places, which hadn’t appeared earlier). Last night a quick search and I had moved to Page 14 and this morning, for the keywords Marketing Castle Rock, I was at page 13. see images below for clarification. Again, if you read my book: Mikkel Pitzner’s Trade Secrets To Marketing Your Business Online, you will know, that a page 13 ranking isn’t gonna get you anywhere. In truth you really need to get to page 1 of Google.

However, we are moving forward and steadily improving our ranking. We will do more steps and see where it will take us. So far we have only done some very small types of steps and they are completely real as opposed to mischievous tricks just to fool Google and other search engines. I don’t go for the so called “Black Hat” tricks. Yes, they may help you out, and yes you may even get to page 1. But in due time, Google will find the loophole that you used and if your material isn’t of relevance nor helping people, then in all likelihood you will lose your ranking and possibly even for good. It’s really just a matter of time.

Therefore, only employ real efforts that makes real sense and provides real value.

Here, I’m aiming to get my ranking up for 3 simple words, Marketing Castle Rock. Marketing for that’s why we do and those are the kind of services we provide, and Castle Rock for that’s the town we are in and while we would like to help people from anywhere really, it just makes sense to help some of the businesses from the local community. It’s almost a game. You implement a few things. Then you wait a bit. Then you go and test to see if you got anywhere with your efforts. It’s actually kinda fun.

If you didn’t get anywhere, then you will have to revisit what you did or even better think about what would have a better outcome for you. Then you try that and see if you got it right this time around. And so on. And so on.

So onwards towards a superb ranking for the 3 chosen keywords: Marketing Castle Rock.

Making It Happen Getting Ranked For Marketing Castle Rock

Quick Follow Up On Marketing Castle Rock

What a difference a night can make. Had a good night’s sleep after having posted the post of yesterday titled: Marketing Castle Rock – Time To Take My Own Medicine.

If you didn’t read it, you can click the link to do so, but in a quick recap, I kind of realized that while I preach what others should do with their online marketing, is to set in motion processes that will make them and their businesses rank well in the search engines for relevant search terms, so that they will have customers come chase them instead of them having to chase customers, then I admittedly found, I wasn’t actually doing so for myself for the Castle Rock Marketing company of Amazing Ideas, Inc.

In other words, I wasn’t being a good example for myself or for the products and services that I sell via my marketing company.

So on to work.

I decided that I would ensure that my ranking with Google for the keywords: “Marketing Castle Rock” would be significant. In other words, I have now started to do the necessary work that I show my clients to do in their businesses (or rather that I will do for them) and I made the first part of the work yesterday evening.

If you review the Marketing Castle Rock – Time To Take My Own Medicine post of yesterday, you will learn that my very first work actually got me from Google’s page 21 to Google’s page 1 in a matter of about 3 hours. You will also, learn that the page 1 listing in fact was my Google Local Places position that popped up on page 1.

Now in truth, you cannot make this happen in 3 hours unless you already have registered your business with Google Local Places, for to do so, Google requires you to verify your local address via a couple of further steps such as via a postcard being sent to you. In other words that takes a few days to get activated and finalized. But in my case I had already done this registering part quite some time ago, but then I hadn’t done anything with it and that meant that I did not pop up anywhere in Google’s page 1 when you searched for Marketing Castle Rock.

Well, as mentioned I did a few things yesterday and that made all the difference. As mentioned, in about 3 hours and from the couple of steps I took, I achieved a Google Local Places position on Google’s page 1 for the keywords “Marketing Castle Rock”.

Again, if you read yesterday’s post Marketing Castle Rock – Time To Take My Own Medicine you will understand why popping up for a local search of relevant terms is critically important for your business and why a local search may have particular interest for you.

You will also see, why my 3 chosen keywords of Marketing Castle Rock, actually has set me up for quite a challenge, since the words are possibly a bit too generic and unspecific. If you make the search for yourself, you will see that the results that come up are for services, product and what not that are all over the place, many of which has little to do with marketing services like the ones I provide. Basically, it proves the point that when you go looking for keywords or for things you wish to rank for, specificity makes a lot of sense. What you really want to be looking for is that you (or rather your website) will pop up when people are searching for the types of products or services you offer specifically. Not only will this have a better chance of leading to sales, but from a user perspective, you will also become much more relevant.

Going back to a search of Marketing Castle Rock, if I was searching for someone to help me marketing my business well and I happened to be in Castle Rock and thus wanted a local company to help me out, well, then the keywords of Marketing Castle Rock might make perfect sense. However, as you can see from the results that are listed, they are all over the place and gives some but still little relevancy to my query. The reason for this is as I have indicated that my search terms are not specific enough.

To stress the point, make your keywords a bit more specific and you will also likely have a better result of how far up you will rank with the search engines. It will also make the search results more relevant and have a much improved chance of actually leading to business for your business. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post Marketing Castle Rock – Time To Take My Own Medicine you can make your keywords more specific by adding a few more descriptive words so that your search term becomes a bit more long tail. Just as an example, you could search Marketing Company Castle Rock.  Or perhaps Online Marketing Company Castle Rock. It narrows things down a bit and makes it a little more specific, but then it’s still very vague.

I just performed such a search and although my company would in fact be a very relevant result to come up, it didn’t do anything for me, meaning I didn’t pop up for the search in the results. The reason is that Google’s search is for the individual words (and again these are a bit too broad – meaning the word marketing probably pops up in way too many writings all over the place from websites and publications). Now if you wish to make your search even more specific, you can just add quotation marks. When I add quotation marks to “Marketing Castle Rock” I now appeared on page 3 of Google (at time of writing this) and when I searched “Marketing Company Castle Rock” I was on page 1. The trouble is, I rarely put quotation marks on my searches. Do You?

I suspect you rarely put quotation marks in your searches either. We are too quick online off to the next thing and don’t wish to waste time on technicalities (or we are too lazy..).

 

Well, back to the beginning of this post. The night was good to me. My rank results improved over the night while I was sleeping so that this morning when searching just Marketing Castle Rock, we are now on page 15 instead of page 21 of the Google search results. Still, nobody will go to page 15, so it’s of little use. But when it comes to search results and optimizing for these it’s not just a matter of throwing up a website and one little post and then miraculously you have arrived. No, it will take a bit more to get there. But is it worth it? You bet!

We will keep at it, and post you the results as we go along. Just remember and review the key lessons from yesterday’s post along with the key points from today’s post (below).

 

Anyways, I think it illustrates a few points:

1. When choosing your keywords, specificity matters

2. Long tail helps you

3. Both 1 and 2 makes you more relevant for those who are searching and there’s a better fit between you and the one who is searching

4. By all means do the work. It all improves your ranking.

Marketing Castle Rock – Time To Take My Own Medicine

I’m a little embarrassed to say this, but today I realized it was time for me to take my own medicine.

Lately, I have been so focused on getting other businesses results and helping them with their online web presence and what I call their online DNA. So focused in fact, that I completely forgot to take my own medicine and make it happen for myself.

My company, Amazing Ideas Inc., is a marketing company located in Castle Rock, Colorado. We specialize in online marketing and have a current focus for the local community’s businesses and a wish to help them rank better for relevant search terms for the local area.

Why? Cause it just makes sense.

Local searches typically hold the most promises for leads that are close to buying. Key phrase: Local.

If you are searching for a vendor or a service of some sort locally, then it’s more than likely because you actually have a need and are more than probably willing to actually buy now.

Looking for a plumber? Well, you probably have a plumbing issue that need tending to, right now.

So what do you do?

You Google for the nearest and best plumber in the area that can come and fix it.

In other words as I said, you are probably an eager buyer right now.

What does this mean for the local vendor?

Well, it is so much nicer to get leads in the door that are actually just about to pull the trigger and buy from you, rather than a browser, who is just kinda looking around a bit.

A local search for a local supplier of services, repairs or goods therefore holds good promise for the local vendor. That means, that as a local business you really should make sure that you hold a very sound focus on showing up in the Google searches (and in the other search engines) with a high ranking for the relevant keywords that are likely to be searched under relevant to what it is that you are selling.

Well, you get this already I’m sure.

But in my eagerness to serve others and to get results for other businesses, I just totally forgot to do this for myself, for my business.

So today, it dawned upon me. Since I’m selling (among other solutions) services that will get your business ranking high in the local searches on Google for relevant search terms for your business, well, then I had better show up early myself for something relevant to myself too.

Makes total sense, doesn’t it.

Ok, so first order of business in such regard is to Google yourself, Google for keywords that makes sense for your own business and own local area. In this case, Google myself.

OK, so far so good. Amazing Ideas, Inc. – what do we do? What are we?

Alright, we are a marketing company or a marketing consultancy or a marketing agency. OK, at least the keyword “marketing” should be important to us.

Second, where are we?

OK, we are in Castle Rock, Colorado.

In other words, “Marketing Castle Rock” might make up some of our keywords. We would like to be found under these keywords, so that when someone searches using these words, we will pop up.

Opening up for a Google search and I tap in “Marketing Castle Rock” (without quotation marks).

Guess what?

Nothing!!

Well, not quite true. I actually appeared but not until page 20. Ouch.

Now, how good is that for convincing other that I know something about what I’m selling?

Nobody looks all the way to page 20 of Google.

In fact by far the most clicks will happened among the first few listings on Google’s first page of the results for your relevant search.

Obviously, I need to do something about this and I had better do something about this now.

Off to work on this.

I made a couple of things and updated my website and made a couple of posts. Then I went for a run, came back took a shower and had a bite to eat and then returned to the desk top.

Excellent. Now at least I appeared on Google first page for these 3 keywords.

Still, it by far from good enough. I have a bit more work to do.

My first page listing now, was the Google Place listing (in which today I’m last).

Looking for the listing for my actual website for Amazing Ideas Inc. under these keywords and I now am all the way back at page 21.

Yup, actually pushed back one spot, but that’s also because I made sure that I now Google “incognito”. For the first search I forgot to log out of Google and search “incognito”. If I Google with Google knowing it’s me, it can affect the results to such an extend that my listings are favored, so that will skew the results and I will delude myself.

I want to appear on Google’s first page as if I was someone, who had no clue or premonition about Amazing Ideas Inc., but who was just looking for the types of services that I offer. Thus the need for searching “incognito”.

Now in truth, it would be a whole lot easier to get found with a better ranking for a longer keyword tail. E.g. it would be an easier task to get found on a better spot in Google results if I searched something longer like “Online Marketing Company Castle Rock Colorado”.

Why?

Because it becomes more specific and the chances are that it will match up better with the words you have on your website etc. Marketing is a very omnipresent word and there are marketing companies all over or other combinations in which marketing is a word, not even necessarily a descriptive for a company.

Castle Rock narrows it down, but what if there were several towns carrying the same name (lots of that around it seems, though perhaps not in case of Castle Rock)?

It will be a serious challenge to get placed on Google results page 1 for just the thre words: “Marketing Castle Rock”. But for sure I can get my listing much, much closer than that of page 21.

Well, as I told you, I did get to page 1 within a few hours, but we can do even better than that. It will just require a bit more work.

Let’s see where we can take it. Let’s see if indeed I can get myself on page one or at least onto the first couple of pages, just using the three keywords “Marketing Castle Rock”.

I will endeavor to make a few more things happen on my end to move up the ranks. The only 3 keywords we will be comparing will again be “Marketing Castle Rock”.

For sure I will rank better much sooner with longer tail keyword usage, but this will be a nice challenge and will serve a great purpose of showing you what can be done and perhaps convincing you, that if you are in more need of help getting your local business (not necessarily in Castle Rock) ranked well, that you might actually call upon my services. I would love to help you and get your business ranked well, so you too can have customers chasing you down in search of your products and services.
